Everyone loves a Labrador Retriever! The breed has been one of the world’s most popular dogs for a quarter of a century. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says they are the most registered of all breeds. People love them for a wide variety of reasons: they make wonderful companions, seeing eye dogs, hunting/fowl retrievers, drug finding dogs, therapy dogs and just overall great family dogs.
Perhaps you are among those who have fallen for the breed, but you are not really sure how to choose between the American Lab and the English Lab. While there is not really an official distinction between English and American Labradors, there are some differences that may matter to you, depending on your reasons for wanting a Lab. Or better yet you can purchase a blended version of the two breeds such as those bred and sold by Poland’s Pups. 🙂

Both Labrador lines come in 3 colors, yellow, chocolate and black and have a water-resistant double coat. Both breeds are friendly and affectionate but the American Labrador is generally a little more active with higher energy and greater drive. The American Lab tends to be a little taller and more lanky (slimmer build, longer muzzle and longer legs) with a slender tail that curves upward. American Labs were bred to be working dogs and are often used as field trial and hunting dogs.
English Labs tend to be quieter, more laid back and little less active, though they enjoy exercise. They have a denser coat, wider, fuller chests, stockier build, shorter legs and thicker, straighter tails. They tend to weigh less than their American counterparts and were originally bred for the show ring where appearance was everything. love taking hikes in the wood or playing games of fetch.
